about

from Frustration Jazz:
FJ003: Birdless Tongues is the third release from the free-noise/drone duo of Dale Chapman and myself, Tim Panaretos, based in Melbourne. The album features three long-form tracks of cosmic sound-scrape populated by sentient machine babble, all improvised with electronics, harmonium and bulbul tarang (otherwise known as the Indian banjo). The Drunken Boat started out as an occasional interstate collaboration in 2011 and the tracks here were recorded during a period of intense activity around the time of our first gig in late 2012, before I had moved to Melbourne. Our thing is always an unplanned and spontaneous exploration of sound, often utilising Dale's collection of instruments from the Indian subcontinent along with other strings and electronics, manipulated via contact mics, pedals and/or string preparations. Whilst we both listen to plenty of music from around the globe, this project is in no way trying to be authentic-sounding and all the instruments are treated simply as noise-making devices. It’s ethno-freeform all the way!

Recorded October 2012 in Coburg, Victoria.
